The SINGLE regret I have in getting married is that we did so in Arizona, where gay marriage was illegal, and when applying for our marriage license we had to check a box that said, essentially, that same-sex relationships were wrong and horrible and checking the box meant that we agreed with that sentiment. Okay, that might not be exactly what it said, but it did require we check a box that assured the courts that we were not a homosexual couple. I hated it. I felt so sick to my stomach to put my name down on a document that discriminated and upheld hate.
But I did. I did because I wanted to marry Paul. I put aside my convictions and I signed it. I checked the box. I ignored the voice in my head telling me that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to legally marry Paul right then, that we could still have our wedding and be married in the eyes of our family and friends and ourselves. I wanted to wait until the day I could sign that paper without having to check that box. Or until we could do so in another state. But I didn’t. And to be perfectly honest, I’ve been ashamed of that decision for the past two years.
There’s nothing I can do to go back and change that. But as of Friday, nobody else will ever have to check that box. I wanted to let the ruling slide by without saying anything, because marriage equality should have always been the rule, not the exception. It shouldn’t be a big deal when a state starts treating its citizens equally, because it should have always been doing so. But Arizona is notorious for being so remarkably discriminatory, and it’s nice to be able to recognize that things are changing around here. My only wish is that the change had come from within, rather than from without. No matter what the law says now, the feelings inside the state remain the same. But at least someone finally told the bullies here to sit down and shut up.

I forgot the most important item on today’s to do list!
Best way to do it?
Ask him to give me a kiss. He does, no problem. Very happy about it. Then ask for another one. He pauses, then does as asked, but then afterward turns his head away. Ask for another. Longer pause, annoyed whine as he turns and gives a kiss with no tongue, but with his mouth open. Then he turns away completely. Speaking to the back of his head now, ask for another. He makes a noise like a toddler who’s just hit its head and can’t decide if it hurts. One long whine that gets louder as it goes. Gives an obviously begrudging kiss and then stares straight at me, daring me to ask again. One last request. Just one more kiss, Fawkes, please. Huge, loud sigh, whine, and huff of frustration (all combined into this weird Fawkes noise — is this the Phoenix song Harry Potter loved so much?), a big sloppy wet kiss, and then he runs away.
Fawkes torment complete. For now.
Okay, no more grocery shopping at stores that aren’t my regulars. Never again, I say!
Yesterday, after picking the child up from school, we stopped at three different stores (Costco, Sprouts and Safeway). I decided to stop at the locations that were on the way home, instead of the ones I usually go to near home.
Since the most convenient Safeway was and is the one next to our house, that wasn’t a problem. But at Costco and Sprouts, both stores were either missing items I needed, or didn’t have the same sales as the stores by me. So I still have to go out to the Costco and Sprouts near me today. My attempt at saving time totally backfired on me. I do not like having to make multiple trips to various locations. It defeats the purpose of having stopped at the store in the first place.
